    The MBTA has funding problems, we agree. But every transit project costs money. And if the answer to a proposal to expand transit is ‘we can’t afford it," we will never expand transit. The money seems always to be available to move automobiles (which are being shown daily not to be the future of urban America), but funding transit (which is the future of urban America) is like pulling teeth. The purpose of the Red-Blue connector on one level is to make the transit system integral. If I-95 ended one-half mile away from I-93, is there any doubt whatsoever that MassDOT would readily propose and fund a project to connect them over that half mile. On another level the Red-Blue connector is to serve patients and employees of Mass General and Eye and Ear, who live in East Boston to get to the hospital. Providing affordable access for them is what transit is supposed to do. Also, making it easy for folks who live in Cambridge to get to the beach again is a worthy goal of transit. Bite the bullet, do the right thing, prioritize transit, move Boston forward. The city is drowning in traffic; all national studies rank Boston near the bottom on this issue. I suspect that Amazon took note and went elsewhere.

    We, the undersigned, wish to voice our displeasure at the treatment of the "Red to Blue Connector" or the extension of the Blue Line to Charles/MGH in the draft Focus 2040 visioning plan. This has been a missing link in the MBTA's subway for far too long. It will most importantly serve the mobility needs of the environmental justice communities of East Boston, Winthrop, and Revere along the Blue Line, as well as communities along the Red Line from Cambridge & Somerville to Boston, Quincy & Braintree. The Blue Line extension would also be a game changer for mobility in the region, providing a strong new link to Logan Airport (now handling 38 million passengers annually) and an important new link to Mass General Hospital. A pedestrian connection means little to a person with limited mobility, parents with young children, or a weary traveler. The Commonwealth shirked its responsibility once before, we should not miss this opportunity to right that wrong and build the Red to Blue Connector as intended. We hope that you will replace the reference to a pedestrian walkway with a commitment to extend the Blue Line to Charles/MGH. Thank you for your time & consideration.
